Cellular Pathways

AKG is formed from isocitrate through the action of the enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase in a process that also results in the release of carbon dioxide. Once formed, AKG undergoes oxidative decarboxylation by the alpha- ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (α-KGDH), a process similar to the reaction catalyzed by the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. This reaction converts AKG into succinyl-CoA, another compound in the Krebs cycle, and produces NADH from NAD+, which is later used in the electron transport chain to generate further ATP.

The role of AKG in the metabolic cycle is pivotal, acting as a critical control point that is responsive to the body’s energy demands and substrate availability. Many commercial AKG supplements are typically under-dosed, providing only 500mg, which is insufficient to harness the full benefits of AKG.
